Tax Assistant – Cheltenham

Salary: Competitive depending on experience | Full-time or Part-time (30+ hours considered) | Hybrid Working

Are you looking to develop your career within tax and join a growing, forward-thinking accountancy practice?

Our client is an established firm of accountants, tax specialists and business advisors based in Cheltenham, providing a comprehensive range of services to businesses, business owners and high-net-worth individuals across the UK.

Due to continued growth, they are looking to appoint a Tax Assistant to join their expanding team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Personal Tax Assistant to work with a varied portfolio of clients in a supportive and professional environment.

The Role

As a Tax Assistant, you will support a portfolio of personal tax clients, including high-net-worth individuals, business owners, sole traders and partnerships.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing a portfolio of personal tax clients.
  • Preparing accurate Self-Assessment tax returns in line with HMRC requirements.
  • Assisting with HMRC enquiries and liaising with clients to resolve tax-related queries.
  • Building strong client relationships and providing a professional, responsive service.
  • Maintaining accurate records and ensuring deadlines are consistently achieved.
  • Using tax software systems such as Digita or similar.
  • Supporting the wider team and contributing to the continued success and growth of the practice.

About You

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous personal tax experience gained within a UK accountancy practice (ideally 1–2 years).
  • Experience managing or assisting with a portfolio of personal tax clients.
  • A good understanding of Self-Assessment and HMRC compliance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with a methodical and organised approach.
  • The ability to manage your own workload and work effectively to deadlines.
  • Confidence dealing directly with clients and providing excellent customer service.
  • Good Microsoft Office skills.

A-levels or equivalent qualifications are preferred, with good grades in Maths and English GCSE.

Studying towards ATT would be advantageous but is not essential. Our client is happy to support professional development and will contribute towards exam costs.

What's on Offer?

  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Permanent position with full-time or part-time hours available (ideally 30+ hours per week).
  • Hybrid and flexible working (minimum 3 days office-based in Cheltenham).
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays (FTE).
  • Contributory pension scheme.
  • Friendly, supportive and collaborative team environment.
  • Excellent opportunity to develop your tax career within a growing practice.

If you are looking for your next opportunity within personal tax and would like to join a successful and expanding accountancy firm, we would love to hear from you.
